Tycoon’s Son Implicated in Car Crash

A son of real-estate tycoon Khun Sear crashed his Mercedes-Benz sports car into a parked SUV while speeding around Phnom Penh’s Wat Phnom in the early hours of Saturday, according to a witness and a man claiming to be the suspected driver’s brother.

Daun Penh district police chief Huot Chanyaran would only confirm that the accident in Srah Chak commune took place, saying the case was “finished.”

Photos of the accident show the hood of a Mercedes SLS AMG coupe—which retails at more than $200,000—wedged underneath a Toyota Highlander, turned onto its side and missing a wheel.

A man who answered a call to the number listed for Mr. Sear’s eponymous import-export company identified himself as the tycoon’s son and the older brother of the driver, giving his name only as Leap and refusing to name the driver.

“He was driving fast and lost control and hit a car that was parked on the road,” he said, adding that his brother had recently left the home of a relative in Chamkar Mon district before the crash.

“We solved the problem face to face at the scene of the accident,” he said. “We paid a little in compensation,” he added.

Meas Sokchy, a tuk-tuk driver who witnessed the crash, said the Mercedes also damaged two other parked cars, but that no one was injured.

“Before the accident, I was standing near a massage parlor and I heard the loud sound of the car coming from about 50 meters away,” he said.

“There were two men in the car and when it reached the massage parlor, it hit a Toyota Highlander, which was parked on the road,” he said, identifying the driver as a man in his 20s. “The crash made a loud sound and the people around here were panicking, even the people inside the buildings.”

Mr. Sokchy said family members of the driver arrived shortly after the accident and gave the owner of the wrecked SUV compensation on the spot.
