Two young sisters and their grandmother drowned during a fishing trip in Koh Kong province’s Sre Ambel district on Sunday, a police official said on Monday.
District police chief Ma Ty said Hang Khim, 60, and her granddaughters Nao Sarim, 10, and Khom Rina, 8, all died after the youngest fell into a canal while fishing on its banks, leading her sister to jump in the water in an attempt to save her, and then the grandmother in an attempt to rescue them both.
“At about 3 p.m. on Monday, Ms. Hang Khim brought her granddaughters and 10-year-old grandson to fish in the Stung Chhay canal in Boeng Preav commune,” Mr. Ty said.
“At that time, the youngest granddaughter drowned first, and then her older sister came to help,” he said.
“Ms. Hang Khim tried to rescue her granddaughters, but unfortunately they cannot swim and drowned together,” he said.
The 10-year-old grandson rushed to alert locals, but all three were already dead when pulled from the water, he said.
