Two Workers Die in Quarry Rock Slide in Kompong Chhnang

Two workers died Wednesday at a quarry in Kompong Chhnang province’s Rolea Ba’ier district, police said Thursday.

District police chief Tim Chanthy said the men were inside the cabin of an excavator, which was digging out rocks from the side of a mountain in Pongro commune, when the machinery was engulfed in a landslide at about 8 a.m.

“Both victims died when the rocks on the mountain collapsed on them,” he said. “The rocks fell from about 8 meters high. It was too heavy.”

Mr. Chanthy identified the victims as Sao Bunnoeun, 33, and his co-driver, Thon Pen, 25. Commune police chief Sanh Bunthoeun said that Loch Chanarith, the manager of the Thlok Trabek mountain quarry site, visited the victims’ families Wednesday evening and paid them compensation.

Sao Bunnoeun’s family received $3,500, and Thon Pen’s family received $3,000, according to Mr. Bunthoeun.

“We are so sorry that the mountain rock collapsed on them,” he said. “It was a case of incorrect technical digging; the co-driver was just learning how to use the excavator and was being taught by Mr. Bunnoeun.”
