Two Shot Dead at Checkpoint

A mixed unit of municipal and military police Friday shot and killed two men on Route 5 in Russei Keo district, Tim Prosar, chief of police for Russei Keo district, said Sunday.

Additionally, the 14-year-old daughter of a Korean businessman remains missing after being abducted in the area shortly before the shooting.

The police were on the look-out for a gang of kidnappers, but instead shot dead Duong Vanna, 25, and Mat Saleh, 20, when the two men failed to stop at a checkpoint at 8:15 pm, said Kranh Sokhon, military police chief for Russei Keo district. The two men were not suspects.

Police put up the checkpoint on Route 5 in the early evening after the daughter of Pak Chhu Houu, a garment factory owner, was kidnapped at 7:15 pm.

The young woman was crossing the Japanese bridge on the way to her father’s garment factory when she was abducted, according to police.

Seven or eight motorcycles surrounded and stopped the car in which the girl was riding, Kranh Sokhon said.
