Siem Reap Provincial Court charged a 32-year-old on Thursday in the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Prasat Bakorng district’s Kandek commune, provincial prosecutor Ty Sovinthal said Friday.
“The suspect confessed that he lured the girl [away from home] and raped her with two other men,” he said. “We have details about his two partners, so if the judge issues arrest warrants, it would not be difficult to find them.”
Nhoem Seila, provincial military police commander, said Matt Rany, 32, allegedly took the girl and her two adult sisters to the provincial capital on July 26 for a holiday with his two friends, with permission from the girl’s mother.
Mr Seila said everyone was sharing a room at a guesthouse but later in the evening, the suspect took the 14-year-old to another room.
Mr Sovinthal said the suspect confessed to raping the girl with his two friends in that room.
In a separate incident, a 31-year-old man was charged on Thursday with raping an 8-year-old in Banteay Meanchey province’s Malai district, Long Cheab, deputy provincial prosecutor, said Friday.
Provincial police chief Hun Heang said Friday that Loek Lay, a farmer, lured the girl, who was watching a video at a neighbor’s home, to the back of the hut by giving her a soft drink on the evening of July 24. After he allegedly raped the girl, he fled the hut when one of his neighbors saw him with the victim.
Local rights group Adhoc reports that there have been 167 child rapes from January to June. The Cambodia Daily has reported on 12 in the month of July.
