Two Military Officers Killed, Two Seriously Injured in Collision

Two military officers were killed and two others seriously injured Sunday in Oddar Meanchey province when their car collided with a tourist bus at the intersection of National Roads 171 and 67 in Anlong Veng district, police said.

The driver of the military car, Lieutenant Colonel Nuon Lim, 46, and junior officer Roem Samros, 17, died of their injuries shortly after arriving at the district referral hospital, said deputy district police chief Has Heng.

Two other Royal Cambodian Armed Forces soldiers, Chuon Cheat, 21, and 26-year-old Taing Ratany, were transferred to the Siem Reap Provincial Referral Hospital, where they remain in a serious condition, he added.

The accident happened at 5:30 p.m. in Trapaing Tav commune when the driver of a bus run by tour operator Hav San, which was returning to Siem Reap City from Choam Sangam border crossing and had no passengers on board, slammed into the sedan as it approached a roundabout.

“I think this accident was caused by [the bus driver] not respecting the right of way…as the bus crashed into the side of the Corolla,” Mr. Heng said, adding that the driver fled the scene of the accident and has not yet been apprehended.

“We will invite representatives of the company and relatives of the dead and injured men to attempt to resolve this case,” he added.

The director of the district referral hospital, Pich Sokha, confirmed that the two men were pronounced dead within 15 minutes of arriving at the hospital.

In a separate incident in Kandal province’s Kien Svay district on Tuesday, an Anchor Beer truck smashed through two stalls in front of Koki market before plowing through six motorbikes and two tuk-tuks, district police chief Pa Sam Eth said, though no one was seriously injured.

“The Anchor truck’s brakes were broken, which caused him to crash into the vendors and motorbikes…but I think it is the fault of the driver for not performing technical checks on his vehicles,” he said, adding that the driver is being held at the district police office awaiting Cambodia Brewery representatives.
