Two Men Drown Hunting Rats in Prey Veng

Two men drowned in Prey Veng province on Tuesday evening during a rat hunting trip after their overcrowded boat sank during a storm in Kompong Leav district’s Kompong Russei commune, an official said Wednesday.

Souv Paosuor, 36, and Chan Sokhunthea, 31, both from Phnom Penh, drowned after the boat they were on with four other rat hunters sank on the Anlong Raing lake as they were heading home after catching rodents in nearby mangroves, said commune clerk Chen Pra.

The pair, who were on the hunting trip along with two other men from Phnom Penh and two locals, encountered heavy rain and winds at around 5 p.m., he said.

“The boat sank because the passengers were too big for the small boat and the big storm hit the boat too,” Mr. Pra said.

The two locals swam ashore while the four men from Phnom Penh—none of whom could swim—struggled to hold on to the sinking boat, Mr. Pra said.

While two managed to stay afloat and were helped to safety, the other two drowned and were found around three hours later by police and villagers, he said.
