Two Brothers Charged Over Drug Slum Shooting

Two brothers were jailed on murder charges in Phnom Penh on Thursday for shooting a young man who failed to deliver the money he owed them for a pawned motorbike, a court official said.

Chhay Chenda was playing a fish-themed arcade game at a drug den in Sen Sok district’s Trapaing Chhouk village in the early hours of Monday when brothers Kong Sophal, 31, and Kong Chansovann, 22, confronted him over the disputed $500, then shot him for refusing to hand it over, according to police.

The brothers were arrested at their home in the village later in the day. Ngin Pech, a deputy prosecutor at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, said Mr. Sophal, who fired the gun, was charged with murder on Thursday, while his younger brother was charged as an accomplice.

“I just charged them: one for the murder and the other one for conspiracy in the same case,” Mr. Pech said. District police chief Mok Hong said the brothers were sent to Prey Sar prison to await trial.
