Two Arrested in Murder Of Kratie Moneylender

Police in Kratie province have arrested two suspects in the murder of a local moneylender early Mondaymorning. Hin Pheap, 61, was murdered at about 2:40 a.m. while sleeping underneath her stilted home in Sambor district, said Bun Chhoeurn, the district police chief.

“Before entering the gate, the suspect first poisoned the two dogs” with tainted meat, he said.

“While the victim was sleeping on her cot, the suspect used a metal bar to stab her in the chest.”

Mr. Chhoeurn said his officers arrested Loek Chanveasna, 27, for the murder Mondayafternoon, but declined to explain how they had tied him to the crime.

Once in custody, he added, Mr. Chanveasna had confessed to the murder and said he was paid 2 million riel, or about $500, by Sun Rany, 47, to kill the lender.

“We also arrested that woman this evening and we are still questioning her at the district police station,” he said.

The police chief said Ms. Rany had not confessed to the crime, but did owe the victim some money, although he did not know how much.
