Two Arrested for Rape of 17-Year-Old Girl

Two teenagers were arrested yesterday for the suspected gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Phnom Penh’s Dangkao district in the early morning, according to a commune police official.

Chim Sokha, 18, along with a 17-year-old, were arrested after the girl filed a complaint claiming they raped her in a field in Prey Sar commune. Another male is accused of attempted rape and remained at large Monday.

The girl and two friends were at a nightclub on Veng Sreng Street in the early hours of yesterday morning when they were offered rides home by five young men, according to Tum Polin, deputy commune police chief.

The girl’s two friends agreed to go home with two of the group, leaving the girl alone with the three others at about 3 a.m. It was then that she says the three attacked her in a field.

“The 17-year-old victim was raped once each by the two suspects after the other girls got rides home with two of the boys,” Mr. Polin said.

The girl claimed she needed the toilet and managed to escape before being raped a third time. She then raised the alarm at a local factory, Mr. Polin added.

District police chief Yim Socheat said the two suspects would be sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court this afternoon to face charges.

“After the victim complained we arrested the two in the morning. The other one we are still trying to arrest,” Mr. Socheat said.
