Two people have been detained for questioning over the murder Thursday of a moneylender in Koh Kong province’s Khemara Phoumint City, police said.
The body of Meng Sai, 53, was discovered by her granddaughter at about 11 a.m. at the family home. By 4 p.m., police had arrested two suspects: a 43-year-old female friend of the victim and the 20-year-old boyfriend of the victim’s daughter.
“Police arrested the two suspects because they had visited the victim in the morning,” said Roh Sokhoeun, chief of the provincial military police’s penal department.
“The victim died at the scene because her skull was broken and she lost a lot of blood.”
Mr. Sokhoeun added that some $2,000 worth of jewelry and an unspecified amount of money had been stolen from the home in Dang Tong commune, and that the grandmother had been killed with an ax.
Min Reaksmey, deputy police chief in Khemara Phoumint City, said that police had attended to the scene shortly after being alerted by the granddaughter.
“When the granddaughter returned from school, she found her grandmother dead on the floor,” he said. “After we got this information, police and military police arrived on the scene but the suspects had already fled.”
