Truck Owner to Pay to Reconstruct Collapsed Bridge

Police on Saturday tracked down the owner of an overloaded truck that caused a bridge to collapse last week in Kompong Cham province.

The bridge’s weight limit was 5 tons and the truck, which was loaded with wood, weighed more than 20. Mok Bavy, Kang Meas district deputy police chief, said the truck’s owner, Leng So Khy, 44, must now take responsibility for destroying the Pur Sala Bridge, which links Kang Meas and Prey Chhor districts, and pay for it to be rebuilt.

“The bridge might be rebuilt soon if the truck owner claims to be responsible,” he said SUnday, noting that documents in the truck led police to Mr. So Khy, who was questioned on Saturday and released.

“I am not sure how much money is needed to rebuild the bridge, but it is not less than $10,000,” Mr. Bavy said.

Mr. So Khy said Sunday that he would pay for a new bridge to be built. “I will be responsible for the accident because it is my truck,” he said.
