Truck Collision Leaves 29 Garment Workers Injured

A truck carrying firewood smashed head-on into a truck full of garment workers in Kompong Chhnang province’s Samakki Meanchey district on Friday morning, injuring 29 of the workers, a police official said.

Deputy district police chief Chum Vibal said the wood-carting Nissan pickup was driving from an unknown location to Phnom Penh on National Road 5, while the Hyundai truck, carrying about 40 garment workers, was traveling in the opposite direction in Sethei commune at the time of the crash, about 6:20 a.m.

“The accident was caused by the Nissan pickup truck,” he said, adding that its driver fled before police arrived at the scene.

“The driver was driving very fast in the rain. That’s why the truck skidded and smashed into the Hyundai coming from the opposite direction,” Mr. Vibal said.

All of the crash victims were sent to the district referral hospital, he said, but four who were seriously injured were later transferred to Phnom Penh to receive further treatment for their injuries.
