Toyota Says Recalled Vehicle Model is Hilux

The local arm of Toyota clarified Tuesday that a vehicle recall announced earlier this month is for Hilux models sold locally between February 2005 and March 2010.

Toyota (Cambodia) Co. Ltd. said customers are now being contacted for inspections of a potentially faulty cable in the Hilux’s driver-side airbag, which could prove fatal in an accident.

More than 100 vehicles have been returned since an international recall was announced April 9. “The driver’s airbag module in the involved vehicles is attached to a spiral cable assembly with electrical connections that could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned,” the email said.

“If this occurs, the airbag warning lamp will illuminate. In addition, the driver’s airbag could become deactivated, causing it to not deploy in the event of a crash.”

Toyota customer service manager Keo Wathenac estimated the number of affected cars in Cambodia could run into the hundreds.
