Tourist Held In Gun Deal

A 40-year-old Japanese tourist was detained last week after firing more than two dozen bullets from an illegally obtained pistol at a paper target in the capital’s Dongkao district, district police chief Mom Soveth said.

Nozomi Hashino was found by police in a quiet area of Trapeang Krasang commune shooting at the target, Mom Soveth said Thursday. The Japanese visitor told police he bought the pistol and 50 bullets for $1,200 from a vendor in Tuol Tumpong Market who told him he was allowed to use the weapon for target practice, Mom Soveth said.

“He was absolutely cheated [when buying the pistol],” Deputy Chief of Foreign Police So Vandy said.

Nozomi Hashino was held for three hours Tuesday before Japanese Embassy officials encouraged authorities to release him, So Vandy reported. He was not charged with any crime and will be allowed to remain in Cambodia, officials said.

Police are trying to find out who sold Nozomi Hashino the weapon, though he could not describe the vendor, nor the exact location in the market, also known as the Russian market, So Vandy said.
