Tourism Down From Last Year

Tourist arrivals in Cambodia during the first half of the year were down by 35 percent from the same period last year, according to Ministry of Tourism statistics.

Slightly more than 96,000 visitors have arrived in Cambodia from January through June, compared to more than 150,000 during the first half of 1997.

In June, 13,609 arrived in Cambodia, the lowest number yet this year. Tith Chantha, deputy director of the ministry’s marketing department, said July’s statistics were not available yet, but expected them to be slightly lower then June, due to the elections.

Industry sources have said they do not expect the number of visitors to increase significantly until the high season begins in October.

Although arrivals in Cambodia in general dipped in June from previous months, the number of visitors flying into Siem Reap directly from Bangkok rose to 801—up slightly from April and May—bringing the total number of tourists coming in on the charters to 4,686 during the first half of 1998.
