Top Cop Gives Beer, Cash to Officers

National Police Commissioner Neth Savoeun visited Preah Vihear province on Sunday and donated 500 boxes of beer and more than $33,000 to soldiers and police stationed along the border for their Pchum Ben celebrations, police said.

“[General Savoeun] provided 50,000 riel [about $12.50] each to 1,500 national police, and he also provided 10 million riel [about $2,500] to five Royal Cambodian Armed Forces units stationed at the border,” said Preah Vihear provincial police chief Sy Kiri.

According to the National Police website, Dol Koeun, Gen. Savoeun’s deputy, also donated 200 cases of beer, 5 tons of milled rice and 1 ton of vegetables to the cause.

In addition to the beer and cash, Gen. Savoeun gave 200 cases of soft drinks, 10 tons of vegetables, 2,000 rice cakes and 6,800 duck eggs to those stationed along the border, which has often been a flashpoint for tension between Cambodian and Thai forces.

General Savoeun also “appealed to the armed forces at the border to strengthen relations between Cambodian and Thailand along the border,” Mr. Kiri said.
