Three More Police Officials Promoted to General

Three lieutenant generals from the national police have been promoted to the rank of general, according to a Royal Decree signed by King Norodom Sihamoni.

The decree, dated February 8, states that Yun Chhunny, Sim Sophal, and Kheng Someth are to be made four-star generals.

“Samdech Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen shall implement this royal decree once signed by the King,” the document states.

Earlier this month, six other police officials were promoted to general including Interior Ministry Secretary of State Ouk Kimlekh, Secretary-General Khieu Sopheak and Mao Bunnarin, director general of logistics and finance.

The other three, Chan Ann, Mao Chandara and Sok Phal, were all deputy director generals of the National Police Commissariat.

Also this month, 29 lieutenant generals in the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces were given the rank of four-star general, drawing criticism form some quarters.

The opposition CNRP has said the government is using the promotions to try and secure the loyalty of the security forces and stave off defections after the ruling CPP in July saw its worst performance in the polls in decades.
