Three Arrested in Rape Cases In K Thom and Battambang

Kompong Thom Provincial Court yesterday charged two men who allegedly raped a 23-year-old woman in Baray district’s Choeung Doeung commune, police and a court official said.

Police arrested Sy La, 19, and Korng Koeurn, 23, on Sunday morning after receiving a complaint Saturday evening from the victim’s family alleging that the suspects raped the victim earlier that day in a forest near the field where she was tending cattle, provincial serious crimes police chief Chea Phoeurn said.

Mr Phoeurn said the suspects, who knew the victim, confessed to the crime. “The suspects grew up in a remote area where education is limited, so they didn’t know that their actions were violating the law,” the police chief said.

Kompong Thom court prosecutor Pen Sarath said that the two suspects were charged with rape yesterday and are being held at the provincial prison.

In a separate case, police in Battambang province’s Sampov Loun district on Sunday arrested a 36-year-old man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl in Santepheap commune, district police chief Pech Saren said.

Police arrested Hoeun Pov on Sunday morning after receiving a complaint from the victim’s family claiming that he dragged the victim to a pig pen outside her home and raped her.

“After questioning, the suspect confessed to raping the girl because he loved her,” the police chief said.

At about 8:30 pm on Saturday, Hoeun Pov, the victim’s neighbor, followed the 12-year-old girl as she went outside her house to use the bathroom. He waited until she came out and then covered her mouth to silence her, Mr Saren said.

“After he raped the victim, he threatened her and then gave her 2,000 riel not to tell anyone,” he said. The girl did not tell her family until the following morning.

Seng Luch, police chief of provincial penal crime reporting and questioning department, said that the suspect would be sent to the provincial court today.
