Kompong Chhnang provincial police cooperated with the Interior Ministry on Wednesday to arrest three people accused of kidnapping a Vietnamese man.
Pol Vuthy, deputy provincial police chief, said that Nguyen Bang Hieu, 34, and another unidentified Vietnamese national kidnapped the victim, Dinh Hong Diep, 26, on November 5 in Bavet City, Svay Rieng province.
Kim Ar, 33, then drove the group to the home of Kim Soriya, 62, in Kompong Chhnang province’s Toek Phos district.
The suspects confined Mr. Hong Diep in the house, then contacted his family in Vietnam and demanded $30,000 for his freedom. His family contacted authorities in Cambodia and cooperated with the Interior Ministry, which instructed them to agree to pay $20,000. The suspects then provided their location to the family.
“We were able to make the arrests because the Interior Ministry knew the location of the home,” Mr. Vuthy said. One of the kidnappers fled and remains unidentified, but the other three suspects were arrested on the scene and are now in custody at the Interior Ministry’s penal department, Mr. Vuthy said.
In Bora, director of the Interior Ministry’s penal department, could not be reached.
