This Lady Lizard Doesn’t Need A Man To Reproduce

Keepers at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo have sort of stumbled on a discovery — Asian water dragons can produce offspring without a mate, something never previously observed with the species.

Until recently, zookeepers would toss out all the unfertilized lizard eggs laid by females who were housed separately from males.

“We call infertile eggs — in the reptile community — we call them slugs,” says keeper Kyle Miller. “So we were like, ‘This is just going to be another batch of slugs.’”
