Thai Authorities Close Border Checkpoint

Dozens of trucks carrying agricultural products into Thailand across a border checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey province have been stopped at the border since Monday by Thai authorities, a military official said Thursday.

Pech Vanna, who heads Cambodia’s military border relations office, said that Thai authorities were not explaining why they would not let the trucks proceed.

“Thai authorities did not provide us with any information before they closed the checkpoint,” he said.

Brigadier General Vanna said the Thai official in charge of the checkpoint had recently changed, which could have caused the backup.

“Every year, whenever Thai authorities change their leading official, they always restrict their security and close the checkpoint without letting our agricultural products or workers into their country,” he said.

He said he could not specify how many trucks were backed up at the border Thursday, but that 60 to 90 trucks generally cross the border into Thailand each day.
