Teens Arrested After Taking Air Gun to School

Two 17-year-old high school students were arrested Saturday in Phnom Penh’s Pur Senchey district after police found one of them carrying an air gun belonging to the other student, district police said.

“First we arrested Teng Davit, who is in grade nine, in his class, after the school director made a report to our police, and then we arrested Teav Darath, who is the owner of the air handgun,” said district police chief Yoeun Sarann.

Davit is a student at Hun Sen-Pochentong Junior High School, while Darath attends the nearby 100 Khnong High School.

He said that Darath confessed to having bought the gun—a replica of a 9 mm Beretta 92F—in Thailand during a recent visit.

Mr. Sarann said police were questioning the teens and had not yet decided whether to charge them.

“If we find out that they have been involved with gangs or they used to fight other students from their schools, we will send them to the court,” he said.

“But if we find out that they are good students and they obey the teachers’ discipline, we will consider it their mistake because we don’t want to spoil those students’ future.”
