Shots fired by gunmen attempting to steal a motorbike killed one man and pierced the door of a popular convenience store Friday, police and witnesses said.
Khut Sophearak, an 18-year-old student, was driving his girlfriend home on his new 2004 Honda Dream motorbike at about 8 pm, when three men stopped him near Sharky Mart in Phsar Kandal II, Daun Penh district, a police officer who declined to be named said Sunday.
The young man struggled with the robbers, and one pulled a gun and fired two shots, said Khiev Sophorn, a Sharky Mart cashier, who was working that night.
One bullet struck Khut Sophearak in the side of his chin, Khiev Sophorn said Sunday.
A security guard at Sharky Bar next door fired two shots at the men, Khiev Sophorn said. But they sped away on the Dream and a Daelim motorbike, firing two shots at the guard.
He was not hit, but one bullet whizzed through the shop’s glass door and lodged in a carton of snack food. No one was injured.
Khut Sophearak died at Calmette Hospital around 7 am Saturday, police said.
Police said they are investigating, but have no suspects. The girlfriend was apparently unharmed, police said.
