A 14-year-old boy raped his 12-year-old neighbor on a cassava plantation in Battambang province on Wednesday after luring her away from her home, a police official said Thursday.
The teenager was arrested at his house in Sampov Loun district’s Serei Meanchey commune that afternoon and confessed to raping the girl, according to deputy district police chief Ly Rum.
“At about [noon], the girl’s mother left the house to visit her neighbor about 40 meters away and left her daughter alone,” Mr. Rum said.
“Unexpectedly, the boy arrived [at the victim’s house] and convinced the girl to visit the cassava plantation nearby,” he said. “The girl agreed to go with the suspect because he promised to give her as much money as she wanted.”
Mr. Rum said the teenager raped the girl on the plantation, and that the two returned to their village separately. He said the girl’s mother filed a complaint with commune police after returning home and noticing that her daughter was bleeding.
“When the mother arrived she saw her daughter looked shocked, with blood on her clothes. She wondered why and began questioning her daughter,” he said.
Mr. Rum said the teenage suspect was arrested at his house on Wednesday afternoon and sent to the district police station, where he admitted to raping the girl.
“Police also found the bloody pants of the victim,” he said, adding that the boy was later transferred to the provincial police headquarters, while the victim was placed in the care of a local NGO.
Vorn Vannara, chief of the provincial police’s anti-human trafficking bureau, said the suspect would be sent to the provincial court today to be charged with rape of a minor.
