The Kompong Cham Provincial Court on Wednesday charged a 16-year-old boy with raping a 3-year-old girl at a local primary school in Batheay district, officials said.
The girl had accompanied her mother to a primary school in Tomnup commune to sell fried bananas on Sunday morning when she wandered away and encountered the suspect, police said.
“The suspect pulled her by the hand inside an empty classroom and raped her immediately,” district police chief Buok Navy said, adding that the crime was committed on one of the school desks.
He said the girl was bleeding and obviously badly injured when she returned to her mother, who immediately alerted police.
Deputy provincial prosecutor Phann Sopheak said that if the suspect was found guilty, his jail term would be automatically be reduced by half, as he was still a minor.
Am Sam Ath, technical supervisor for rights group Licadho, said that his organization had seen a slight increase in child rapes, from 28 cases during the first two months last year to 31 so far this year.
