Taxi, Worker Joint Rally Scheduled

Motorbike taxi drivers and garment workers from the Free Trade Union are planning to demonstrate together at 8 am on Sept 24 to protest utility prices.

Ul Chroeung, a spokesman for the motorbike taxi drivers, said the protesters will ask the government to lower the price of gasoline to 1,500 riel per liter, the price of water to 300 riel per cubic meter, and the price of electricity to 350 riel per kilowatt hour.

“I don’t believe the government will take our demand, but at least our protest will draw the attention of the donors and the international community that we, the poor, suffer by these costs,” Ul Chroeung said. The drivers say the high cost of gasoline is causing them financial hardship, eating into already small profits made ferrying people through the city.

The drivers plan to drive through the main streets then gather in front of the National Assembly.
