Talks Focus on Y2Cambodia

Where will Cambodia be in the year 3000?

“Cambodia in the New Millennium,” a conference organized by the local think tank Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace, aims to find out.

CICP director Kao Kim Hourn said it’s a perfect time for Cambodia to reflect on its troubled recent past and work out how to make the best of the future.

“It’s a period of peace, we have a coalition government that seems to be working….It’s basically Cambodia moving out of a long period of isolation.”

Prime Minister Hun Sen and National Assembly President Prince Norodom Ranariddh are scheduled to deliver keynote speeches. The conference runs Jan 12 to 14 at the Hotel Sofitel Cambodiana in Phnom Penh.

The program includes talks on the legacy of the Khmer Rouge and the upcoming trials of its leaders, the future of the monarchy, and Cambodia’s new position in the region and its prospects for economic development.

There also will be talks on the role of religion, human rights and Cambodia’s youth.

“The whole idea is to let the speakers cover wide-ranging issues,” Kao Kim Hourn said.
