Sweden Requests Convicted Drug Dealer’s Extradition

Sweden’s ambassador to Cambodia has requested that the Cambodian government extradite a Swedish national convicted of dealing drugs to serve the remainder of his sentence in Sweden, a Justice Ministry official said Thursday. Anders Bergstedt, 57, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for selling and smuggling drugs in 2011.

During a meeting with Justice Minister Ang Vong Vathana on Wednesday, Swedish Ambassador Anna Maj Hultgard asked the government to consider extraditing the man now that a portion of his sentence has been served.

“Mr. Anders has served three years in jail here and now the Swedish government wants to extradite him to jail there,” said Chin Malin, undersecretary of state at the Justice Ministry.

In May 2013, the Appeal Court upheld the conviction and sentence handed down by the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court. According to Mr. Malin, the Justice Minister told the ambassador he was considering the request.
