Suspect in Fatal Grenade Attack Faces Murder Charge

A man arrested Sunday for killing an 11-year-old boy and injuring five others with a grenade in October will be sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court today to be charged with premeditated murder, a police official said Tuesday.

“The perpetrator confessed that he was hired by one man to lob a grenade to kill the victim,” said Lieutenant Colonel Phan Daravuth, deputy chief of the Phnom Penh military police’s justice department.

“We have accused the perpetrator of premeditated murder and tomorrow we will send him to the court,” he said.

Lt. Col. Daravuth identified the man as 27-year-old Nuon Sarith and said he was arrested Sunday while driving a moto-taxi on Hanoi Street in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district. Police originally gave the suspect’s age as 20.

Mr. Sarith was apparently one of two men who lobbed a grenade at the home of Sorn Sin, 56, killing the real estate broker’s son, Sin Dara.

Lt. Col. Daravuth said the suspect and his unknown accomplice were paid $400 for the attack and police were searching for others.
