Somaly Mam Foundation Plans to Change Its Name

The Somaly Mam Foundation (SMF) announced on Friday that it will change its name following the resignation of Somaly Mam, its former president whose stories of being trafficked for sex as a teenage girl have been exposed as a fabrication.

Ms. Mam has also been accused of coaching girls under her care to tell invented stories to journalists and donors.

“We will also be rebranding, renaming, and relaunching our organization,” says a statement posted to SMF’s website from Gina Reiss-Wilchins, its executive director.

Ms. Reiss-Wilchins writes that SMF will put forward its “expanded vision” for the organization “in the coming weeks.”

Ms. Mam resigned last month after the publication of a Newsweek story brought international attention to her dishonest practices as the head of the organization.
