A Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) soldier arrested last week by Thai authorities over a hit-and-run that killed a man was released from custody on Sunday after compensating the victims and paying money to the court to the tune of $60,000, according to a post on Cambodia’s National Police website Tuesday.
Rong Sarim, deputy military commander in Battambang province’s Sampov Loun district, was detained by Thai police after he fled a collision that left one Thai national dead and another seriously injured.
He was driving back to Cambodia after taking his pregnant wife to a Thai hospital for a check-up.
According to the post on the National Police website, Mr. Sarim was released on Sunday after paying $60,000, a portion of which went to the victims and an unspecified amount to the court in Thailand’s Chonburi province.
Reached by phone Tuesday, Mr. Sarim—who is now back in Cambodia—said that his case had been concluded.
“I already compensated them,” he said. “I solved everything with this problem, so I was released.”
