Soldier Murdered by Gunshot to Head While Sleeping

A Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) soldier was shot in the head on Saturday night while asleep in the house he shared with his wife and four children in Battambang province, police said Sunday.

Ly Chornchhun, 47, a sergeant major in RCAF Battalion 53 stationed in Phnom Proek district’s Bour commune, died from a single gunshot to the head, deputy provincial police chief Chet Vanny said Sunday.

“The victim, a soldier, was shot on the right side of his head, with the bullet exiting below his left ear, killing him instantly,” Mr. Vanny said, adding that the murder took place at 6:40 p.m. and that police had been informed by his family.

District police chief Song Sopheak said that police were searching for the gunman and had determined that he had used a K-54 handgun to carry out the murder.

“Our investigation units are investigating, but the gunman has not yet been identified,” he said, adding that police had no leads on what might have motivated the killing.
