Soldier at Large After Fatal Hit and Run

A Royal Cambodian Armed Forces major is on the run after hitting a motorbike carrying three passengers with his Toyota Camry in Kratie province on Monday, killing one and injuring two, police said Tuesday.

Snuol district police chief Chan Sokim said that Major Chheum Phearum was driving along National Road 76 on the way back to Snuol from Phnom Penh when he tried to overtake another vehicle and crashed into the oncoming motorbike at about 2 p.m.

Som Em, 31, died at the scene, while her daughter and 50-year-old mother are receiving treatment at the district hospital from a leg and head injury, respectively.

“He drove fast and tried to overtake a makeshift tractor,” Mr. Sokim said. “He crushed the oncoming motorbike.”

By the time authorities arrived on the scene, he added, Maj. Phearum had fled, leaving the Camry behind. “Now we are trying to find the suspect,” he said.

“If we find him, we will detain him to make him compensate the victims and face the law.”
