The ruling CPP has named Sok Sokhan, a son of Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, as a lawmaker for Takeo province, replacing the late former Posts and Telecommunication Minister So Khun, the parliament’s spokesman said Monday.
Mr. Sokhan’s status as a lawmaker is set to be announced by the parliament’s permanent committee on April 1, when the next sitting of lawmakers is scheduled, according to National Assembly spokesman Chheang Vun.
Mr. Vun said two other CPP candidates were listed above Mr. Sokhan in Takeo at the 2013 national election, but both had declined to take up the position.
“Secondly, he is a talented youth, and the CPP is…after the party’s congress pushing youth participation in leadership roles within the party and the legislative and executive branches,” Mr. Vun said.
“So he is the best candidate for this replacement because the CPP is giving a chance for the youth to exercise their capacities.”
Mr. Sokhan’s father, Mr. An, worked as one of Prime Minister Hun Sen’s closest advisers in the 1980s and is currently in charge of the Council of Ministers.
