SITC Owner Michael Yu Arrested in Taiwan

Michael Yu, the owner of Cambodia’s Singapore International Teaching Consultancy, who fled Vietnam last month as his teaching business collapsed owing hundreds of thousands of dollars to students and staff, has been arrested in Taiwan, according to news reports.

Yu was arrested in Taipei and is to be tried on an fraud charge in Taiwan before being repatriated to Vietnam for fraud charges related to SITC, according to reports by the Vietnam News Agency and Thanhnien News.

Officials at the Cambodian Ministry of Education sent a letter on Feb 23 inviting Yu or a representative of his two SITC schools in Cambodian to visit the ministry on Monday.

“We asked Mr Michael Yu or a representative of SITC II to come to the department Monday Feb 27 to clarify all the problems of the structure and administration,” said You Virak, deputy director of the department of higher education.

Pok Than, Secretary of State at Ministry of Education, confirmed that officials were looking into SITC.

Pok Than said that he was concerned about schools defrauding students and teachers, as they appear to have done in Vietnam, but added that at this time it is difficult to prevent this as the schools find ways to stay one step ahead of the government.

“They open one company and then open one company and then open another company under a different name,” he said.
