Singer Jailed for Seven Years on Child Sex Charges

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Wednesday sentenced a popular singer to seven years in prison for procuring child prostitution after she provided a man with a 14-year-old girl to have sex with, a lawyer said Thursday.

The singer, Ou Reaksmey, 36, part of the Rey Meas production company’s stable of talent, was arrested last January after the child’s mother filed a complaint with police.

Chea Nara, a lawyer representing the child, said Ms. Reaksmey was jailed for seven years and ordered to pay about $5,000 in compensation to the victim.

“She was convicted of procuring prostitution yesterday evening,” Mr. Nara said.

During her trial in August, prosecutors accused the singer of taking the girl to have sex with a Cambodian-American man three days in a row.

Ms. Reaksmey’s lawyer, Ou Vuth, said Thursday that the conviction was unjust. “In the courtroom, she claimed she did not do it,” he said.

“It is injustice to my client. Next week, I am going to meet her to ask her whether she will appeal to the Court of Appeal or not.”
