Sihanoukville Port Sees Cargo Increase Month-on-Month

The total weight of goods transported through the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port in January increased 26 percent compared with the same period in 2013, a port official said Tuesday.

More than 309,200 tons of goods passed through the port last month compared with 244,710 in January 2013. Chea Sambath, director of the Planning and Statistics Department at the port, said the increase in cargo was sign of a growing economy.

A total of 3.01 million tons of goods passed through the port during 2013, a figure Mr. Sambath expects to be exceeded this year.

“We have exported a lot of rice to more than 30 countries,” he said. “Garments are still another major product that we export,” he added.

Garments and textiles accounted for 80 percent of Cambodia’s total exports last year and were worth $5.53 billion.
