Seven young men were charged with murder by the Kompong Cham Provincial Court on Friday over the brutal slaying of a teenager in Tbong Khmum province last week, officials said Sunday.
Police say Mab Nai, 16, was murdered with an ax after fleeing with a friend from a Pchum Ben party in Tbong Khmum district’s Thma Pich commune on the night of September 22, following an argument with another group of teenagers on the dance floor.
Five suspects, ages 16 to 18, were arrested Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Sem Sophear, 20, and Yem Bunhour, 21, were arrested [on Thursday] and sent to court on Friday,” commune police chief Ork Ny said Sunday.
Kompong Cham court prosecutor Huot Vuthy said all seven suspects were charged with murder on Friday and sent to pretrial detention at the Kompong Cham provincial prison.
Police discovered Mab Nai’s body about 200 meters from the location of the party with about 10 ax wounds.
The victim’s friend managed to flee on foot.
If found guilty, the suspects face 10 to 15 years in prison.
