Senior Opposition Lawmaker Summoned to Court

Senior opposition CNRP lawmaker Mu Sochua has been summoned for questioning at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday over the protest at Freedom Park that turned violent on July 15, her lawyer said Tuesday.

“The investigating judge, Keo Mony, has summoned my client Mu Sochua to appear before the court on the 11th for additional questioning regarding the July 15 incident,” said the lawyer, Meng Sopheary.

Ms. Sochua said she would honor the summons in spite of her apparent immunity from prosecution as a lawmaker.

“I will go for sure,” she said. “We all know that every charge laid against us was made by a non-independent court. So I will go to appear before the court to prove how the Cambodian court system is not independent.”

Six other CNRP lawmakers were also charged in connection with the demonstration last year, but Ms. Sochua said she was aware only of her own summons.

Separately, Chan Chen, the lawyer for CNRP official Meach Sovannara and 10 other party activists charged over the same protest, said Tuesday that his clients would have their cases tried by the court on May 19.
