Sam Rainsy Testifies About Sok Yoeun Case in Thailand

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy said Monday in a Thai court that Prime Minister Hun Sen masterminded the 1998 Siem Reap rocket attack widely claimed by his supporters to have been an attempt on the prime minister’s life.

Sam Rainsy was testifying at a court hearing for Sam Rainsy Party member Sok Yoeun, who has been jailed in Thailand since late 1999 while Thai authorities consider an extradition request from Cambodia.

Sok Yoeun has been named by the Cambodian government as its chief suspect in the attack, which left Hun Sen unharmed.

Sam Rainsy told the court Hun Sen used the attack to target the opposition party, The Nation, a Thai newspaper, reported. Sam Rainsy said the tight security surrounding the motorcade would have made a legitimate assassination attempt impossible.

Sok Yoeun fled to Thailand after the government arrested two Sam Rainsy Party members in Battambang province.

Finland has agreed to grant him assylum if he is freed.
