S Korean Man Dies After Being Shot in Dispute

A South Korean man who was shot Saturday night in Siem Reap town died in the hospital Tuesday in what police are saying was a dispute between business partners over sluggish progress at their company.

The deceased, identified by police as Hun Kang, 46, died at Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh after suffering two gunshot wounds to the chest, while his 35-year-old translator, Sung Kwon, also Korean, sustained minor injuries to his hand and back during a brief struggle with the attackers.

Doung Sokha, the penal police officer in Siem Reap in charge of the murder investigation, said the victim was a shareholder of a business selling sandals to tourists visiting the Angkor Wat temple complex.

Doung Sokha named two South Koreans who ran the sandal business—Kwan Hwang-dae, 34, and Woo Hyun-duck, 43—as suspects in the death of Hung Kang.

The shooting allegedly took place at around 8 pm Saturday as the four men were driving to dinner on National Road 6—roughly 10 km east of Siem Reap town in Kandek commune, Prasat Bakorng district, Doung Sokha said.

Hun Kang was in town checking on the lackluster progress of his sandal business and was allegedly shot inside the vehicle by his two business partners, Doung Sokha said.

“We found three empty bullet shells and one handgun inside the victim’s car and another handgun outside the car,” he said, adding that the shooting and commotion inside the car caused the vehicle to swerve off the road and crash.

It is unclear if the two suspects were injured in the wreck, he added.

Siem Reap Provincial Penal Police Chief Ou Em said police believe the two suspects hailed a taxi to Phnom Penh shortly after the shooting and have since fled the country.

Hun Kang was first taken to Siem Reap provincial hospital and then rushed to Calmette where he died, said Min Chantha, Prasat Bakorng district police chief.

Police said Sung Kwon was also an intended target but fended off the gunmen. He is expected to make a full recovery.
