Russian Man, Girlfriend Killed in Traffic Accident

Police in Preah Sihanouk province are working to identify a Russian man and his Cambodian girlfriend who were killed in a traffic accident in Sihanoukville on Saturday night, a police official said Sunday.

Deputy provincial traffic police chief Ket Sopheak said the couple was killed instantly when a Lexus SUV hit a median, flipped and smashed into their motorbike on Ekareach Street at about 10:30 p.m.

He named the driver of the SUV as Sao Long, 36, who he said had been taking two other men home from a party.

“My officers and I were unable to determine whether or not the driver was drunk because he was unconscious after the crash,” he said.

“The two [on the motorbike] died at the scene.”

Mr. Sopheak said police questioned neighbors of the victims, a Russian man in his 40s and his Cambodian girlfriend, but had so far been unable to identify them.

“We have been searching for the identities of the two dead people,” Mr. Sopheak said.

“Our forces are guarding the driver [of the SUV] at a private clinic where he is receiving treatment.”
