Russian Freed After Injuring Boy While Driving Drunk

A Russian national who injured a 14-year-old boy in Sihanoukville after crashing his motorbike into the teenager’s trash collection cart while driving drunk on Tuesday was released from police custody on Wednesday, officials said Thursday.

Andrew Ferov, 24, was driving back to his guesthouse in the city’s Bei commune when he careered into the cart, according to Preah Sihanouk provincial traffic police chief Prom Pov.

“The Russian suspect hit the cart and then the cart hit the boy who was picking up bottles,” Mr. Pov said.

“The boy was slightly injured.” Mr. Ferov was freed after his lawyer submitted a request for his release to the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court, he said.

Deputy prosecutor Rous Saram said the case was still being investigated and that Mr. Ferov would be rearrested if charges are laid.

“We released him because the victim was not seriously injured, and he is a tourist in our country—so a small problem should not become a big problem,” he said.
