Russian Arrested Over Erratic Behavior, Knives

Police in Sihanoukville on Thursday arrested a 61-year-old Russian man they deemed a danger to the public after hearing of his erratic behavior and discovering his collection of knives, a police official said.

Hun Sorithy, a deputy Preah Sihanouk provincial police chief in charge of the force’s immigration bureau, said the man was arrested at his guesthouse in the city’s Buon commune after the establishment’s owner reported that he appeared to be on drugs.

Mr. Sorithy said that when police arrived, the Russian was found in a disorientated state, and in possession of seven knives.

“He had a weapon with him, so we decided to arrest him. If we had not arrested him, he would use his knives to stab people; he has a mental problem,” he said.

Mr. Sorithy said that the man had only a photocopy of his passport, which was expired.

He said the Russian was being held at the provincial police headquarters and would be sent to the Interior Ministry’s immigration department in Phnom Penh on Friday, but declined to say whether the man would be deported.
