Royal Revelry Set for Week

Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday again gave his best wishes to King Norodom Sihanouk, telling a crowd at a flood relief stop in Phnom Penh’s Dangkao district that the nation needs the monarch to remain “the tree who provides cool shade for the Cam­bo­dian people.”

Hun Sen added that “the role of His Majesty the King is very important for national reconciliation and peace.”

The King, who turns 78 today, also received a birthday greeting from Pope John Paul II, who praised his courage and dedication to working for peace and prosperity.

The King will give alms to 79 monks this morning at the Royal Palace. At 6:30 tonight, there will be a 15-minute fireworks show in front of the Royal Palace. TVK began a three-day tribute to the King on Monday.
