Rice Exporter, Chinese Firm Ink Major Rice Deal

Cambodian rice exporter QC Rice Co. Ltd. On Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China’s Rui Energy International Co. Ltd. to export 250,000 tons of rice over the next two years, according to QC Rice CEO Tharo Ichiro.

“We signed a deal today with the Chinese company to export our Cambodian rice to China,” he said.

“This is an amount that we alone cannot respond to, so we need to cooperate with other local companies. In this regard, I will talk with the president of the [Cambodian] Rice Federation.”

Cambodian Rice Federation vice president Kim Savuth said the federation would help QC Rice meet the 250,000-ton mark.

“We welcome the cooperation…to find local partners to fulfill the amount of rice to export to China,” he said, adding that the exports would include Cambodia’s high-end Phka Rumduol and Sen Pidor rice varieties.

As part of the deal, Mr. Tharo said, QC Rice will purchase 150 pieces of machinery, including tractors from Rui Energy, to help boost production.

Rui Energy CEO Jun Kong said he sought out a Cambodian firm for the rice-export deal in order to market his company’s products in the country.

“Cambodia is one of our main targets in the region. That’s why we signed this MoU to cooperate with this local company to promote our agricultural equipment,” he said.
