Relief Supplies Distributed to Flood Victims

The government distributed about $10,500 in aid to flood victims Tuesday, the initial distribution of $290,000 of aid pledged by Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Peou Samy, secretary general of the National Committee for Disaster Management, said Tuesday that the money was spent to provide survival kits, food and medicine to those affected by the flood in Kampot and Koh Kong provinces.

At least five children drowned in last week’s flash floods. Hundreds of families were left homeless. Damages total almost $300,000, The Associated Press reported Tuesday, citing a government report.

Officials said that more than 2,000 residents in Koh Slar commune especially had been hard-hit and were running out of food.

“At least 60 percent of the residents have malaria and diarrhea,” Peou Samy said.

Helicopters were to fly to Koh Slar today to distribute 520 mosquito nets, 11 boxes of medicine and 1 ton of second-hand clothes to the stranded residents.

Third Deputy Governor Chhit Sokhon said the road leading to Koh Slar is still inaccessible. “There are a lots of streams up there, so we cannot bring the aid by road.”

In nearby Taken and Trapeang Khlaing communes, 1,335 families have been affected by the flood, Chit Sokhon said.

Koh Kong residents will receive 34 tons of rice and nearly 2,000 survival kits on Sunday, Peou Samy said. About 2,000 residents there were affected by the flood, he said.

Disaster officials also are scheduled to visit Kompong Cham province today to assess the flooding there, Peou Samy said.
