The Ministry of Labor met with more than 40 labor recruitment agencies Tuesday morning and agreed to formalize and expedite the process of sending Cambodian workers back to Thailand.
According to Minister of Labor Ith Sam Heng, the recruitment agencies will be given authority to endorse migrant workers, who will be charged a total of $49 for a passport, working permit and Thai employment visa, along with transport and food. Workers will also be eligible for the reduced-fare documentation with endorsement from a Thai employer.
More than 240,000 workers have reportedly returned from Thailand since the country’s military took power in a coup d’etat late last month and imposed measures to clean the country’s labor force of illegal migrants. About 10,000 of those workers have already made the trip back to Thailand, according to border officials.
