anlong veng, Oddar Meanchey province – Residents here are bemoaning the establishment of checkpoints on the road from Siem Reap, which they say are run by government soldiers to extract money from travelers and merchants.
The Andong Bey checkpoint, 20 km south of Anlong Veng, charges at least 25,000 riel ($6.50) per truck and 1,000 riel ($0.26) per motorcycle, residents here said.
Three checkpoints are deployed along on the road from Siem Reap to O Bai Tap and Srey Noy. Several Anlong Veng residents said the checkpoints are manned by Military Region 4 soldiers.
RCAF Deputy Chief of General Staff Meas Sophea said this week that the soldiers are former Khmer Rouge troops. He called the allegations attempts to “disgrace RCAF’s honor.”
